Note about Field Trip

Posted by mrlivingston on January 26, 2012

As the Field Trip Permission Anne Frank slips start to come in, I want to clarify the need for and availability of chaperones.

I do not have enough reserved tickets for all of the wonderful chaperone volunteers.  Once Feb 3rd arrives (the due date for the permission slips), I will be closer to knowing all the numbers, and I will be able to contact volunteers directly to let them know if I have a ticket for them or not.

Some of these shows are packed full, and some have room to spare.  I do not know if this performance will sell out, but if I can get more tickets I will try.

We also welcome a contribution for the chaperone ticket, but we will also happily cover the cost of your ticket in exchange for your service to our students.

Thanks everyone.   I have roughly 50% of the permission slips in to date, and I’m hoping to get the rest in ASAP.

EMID Updates

Posted by mrlivingston on January 22, 2012

Greetings,

It has been far too long since my last post.  I’ll try to make-up for lost time by putting a lot of information in this post.  Here goes:

EMID Update:

Simply put, we need all families present at the next two school board meetings, the first of which is Wednesday, Jan 25th at 5:30 @ Harambee.  For more information for parents and other stakeholders about what is happening in our district, please visit http://www.emidfamilies.org/

Our Spanish teacher and one of the “Founding Mothers/Fathers” of the Crosswinds program, Kristen Konop (aka Ms. KK), wrote the following letter via EmidFamlies:

Revision: the following letter was written by the EMIDFamilies group, not Ms. KK.  I was in error when I attributed this to her.  Nevertheless, the content is as follows:

Dear EMID Families,

The EMID board has posted its packet of materials for the board
meeting taking place this Wednesday, January 25th at 5:30 pm at
Harambee Elementary School. You can find it here:
http://www.emid6067.net/packets/EMID%20Board%20Packet%201-25-12.pdf.
Among other important pieces of information in that packet is a
recommendation that the board will be considering, a budget proposal
that would reduce funding to EMID in a major way, and to the schools
dramatically, using only the backpack funding for the schools and
sending all of the integration funding to the member districts.

I’m writing to you with two urgent requests.

First, that you write a letter to your board representative ASAP (here
are the email addresses for the board:
http://www.emidfamilies.org/board, and the email addresses for the
district superintendents:
http://www.emidfamilies.org/superintendents). We have to let them
know, BEFORE THE WEDNESDAY MEETING, that we are concerned about the
proposals.

Second, that you attend the board meeting this Wednesday. There will
not be much opportunity to speak, but just showing up in person will
help the board to see how important this is to us. The meeting will
begin at 5:30 pm at Harambee.

Here are the points we’ve talked about to stress to board members and
superintendents:

(1) It’s not fair to ask the two EMID schools to absorb such huge cuts
to their funding. No regular district schools function solely on the
basis of backpack funding alone. Why should the board require Harambee
and Crosswinds to do so?

(2) EMID is still in the process of doing strategic planning, and the
Community Council hasn’t met yet. What is the point of adopting a
budget that sends money to the districts before knowing what the
strategic plan for spending those integration funds will be?

(3) With schools all over the state being forced to reduce their
spending, we know that there will need to be some cuts to the budgets
for Harambee and Crosswinds. But these cuts should be made in a
sustainable way. That is, the board voted to keep the schools open,
and should fund them in a way that makes that possible. Further, the
board should NOT be spending down the reserve funds balance. Doing so
essentially says the schools will not be open into the future.

(4) As we’ve said over and over again, we need accountability. What
are the individual school districts going to be doing with the
integration funds the Board proposes to send to them? Where are their
plans? Where is the evidence that sending the money to the districts
will have a stronger impact than keeping it in the EMID collaborative
where all of the districts together are already accomplishing more
than they could alone? The state has allocated integration funds to
EMID to do integration. We’ve been doing that really well in EMID in
ways that have made the two schools, in particular, models not only
here in MN, but also nationally. Why take that apart now?

I know that this is a busy time of year, and you’ve already worked
hard to keep these schools open. We won that victory, but if we can’t
keep the funds flowing to the schools, that victory won’t mean much in
the long run. Please write to your board representative, and to the
superintendent of your home district, and urge them to ask the EMID
Board to seek other ways to manage their funds

The questions raised above demonstrate the predicament in which we find Crosswinds and Harambee.  We had a great showing of support when the Board met to vote on school closure this Fall.  During the next two school board meetings, decisions will be made that will determine whether the school programs will be open past 2012-13 school year.  We need that kind of turn-out this week.

Homework #5: No Name Calling Week

To support Crosswind’s participation in “No Name Calling Week” , I am using one of the activities as a homework assignment this week.  There are several connections between name calling and bullying and what we are studying in terms of the Holocaust.  In fact, according to “Genocide Watch,” the first of 8 stages of genocide is classification.  Clearly, calling someone a “Prep” or a “Nerd” doesn’t, by itself, lead to the next stages of genocide, but awareness and caution should be used when humans label each other based on differences.

The assignment is here: HW#5 – Popular

Honoring differences and building understanding of people who are different than ourselves is one of the values of an Crosswinds & Harambee education.  I hope that this has been your experience working with us, and I wish that the leaders of our School Board as well as local Boards and Superintendents would consider this reality as they continue to make decisions affecting our programs.

Field Trip: Park Square Theatre

On Thursday last week, I handed out permission slips for a trip to see the Diary of Anne Frank at Park Square Theatre.  While the due date is February 3rd, the sooner we can get the slips in, the better.  A copy of the permission slip is here: Field Trip Permission Anne Frank

Gradebook Closing:

Any missing assignments that are past-due must be turned-in by Friday, February 3rd in order to count on the 2nd quarter grade.  This also goes for any revisions of major papers or projects.  The only assignment I will accept after this date will be things we do in-class as well as the 6 books/quarter assignment.

Anne Frank and the Holocaust

Posted by mrlivingston on January 2, 2012

Welcome back students and families,

The remainder of 2nd quarter will be spent reading the dramatic (play/script) version of The Diary of Anne Frank, studying the events that lead up to the Holocaust, and comparing those events to things happening in today’s world.  This unit will push students to think globally and to consider ideas from a variety of perspectives.  Traditionally, this unit is one that students very much enjoy.

A summary of the unit can be found here: AF UnitSummary

This week’s homework assignment will be based off of the lesson on Tuesday.  Please don’t start the assignment until after class on Tuesday, but you can find the assignment here: HW#4 AF Prompts

Additionally, we do have an opportunity to see this play performed at Park Square Theater.  The field trip date is during 3rd quarter (March 5th), but we will do permission slips in a few weeks.  This field trip is part of the curriculum and participation is required.  We will have scholarships for those who need them and we welcome additional contributions if you would like to sponsor another student’s attendance.  More details on the field trip to follow.

Word Study Project

Posted by mrlivingston on December 20, 2011

The Word Study Project asks students to choose a word (from provided list) and complete some research about that word.  Then, students will create an attractive and informative poster about that word.

Summative_WordStudy –> This is the assignment sheet (note: we will not have time for the reflection prompt, that’s why it is crossed out)

WordStudyRubric –> How the project will be graded.

EDIT: The project is due on Friday, Dec 22nd.  I meant 23rd.  Friday the 23rd.

This Week in L.Arts

Posted by mrlivingston on December 19, 2011

Greetings,

I’m at a coffee shop feverishly trying to grade the rest of the Response to Literature Essays.  I’ve finished all of periods 2 and 7, and my goal is to get a large chunk of 1, 3 and 4 wrapped up this evening.  My personal deadline is to get all papers back to students by Wednesday of this week.

With that in mind, I’ve given students a homework holiday this week.  That’s right, no new homework this week.  Instead, students can spend time reading towards their 6 books a quarter assignment and/or working on revising their “RTL” essay.

Again, I’ve given each student specific feedback they can use to revise their writing.  I’m also clearing my schedule during lunch this week, and if students have questions about their papers, I’ll be happy to help them during a working lunch period.

In class this week, we’ll be starting our Summative project for the Word Study unit.  This assignment will be completed in-class and turned-in before break begins.  More info to follow later; I need to get back to grading papers.

Extra Work Day Added

Posted by mrlivingston on December 11, 2011

Greetings,

I was able to add another work day for our “Response to Lit” paper for Monday, Dec 12th. Since I was absent for Friday, I really have no idea how much progress students made on their papers.   I’m hoping that Monday’s work day will allow all students the final amount of time they will need to complete the work.

For those students who are finished, they will get this week’s “homework” and they will be able to complete it in-class.

That homework assignment is here: HW#3: Word Map

I will explain the assignment in-class on Monday.

RtL Progress

Posted by mrlivingston on December 8, 2011

This week we have been very busy writing our “Response to Literature” 5 paragraph essay.  This has been a demanding task for our young writers, but they have mostly risen to the challenge.

On Thursday or Friday, students will have time to type their papers that they have handwritten in class.  The FINAL draft will be due on Tuesday, Dec 13th.  I thought I would give the entire weekend plus one day in the event students wanted to work on this more while at home.

The assignment will be scored in three different ways and all of the scores will be SUMMATIVE scores.  Please see theRtLRubric for details.

Response to Literature Unit

Posted by mrlivingston on November 29, 2011

We will open 2nd quarter with a brief (2 week) unit which I will call “Response to Literature” or “RtL” for short.

Essential Question

How do we prove we are right?

Area of Interaction

Human Ingenuity: When we create arguments, we build them upon strong evidence or spoof.

Significant Concept(s)

  • Opinions need evidence
  • thesis statements
  • 5 paragraph essay structure

Summative Assessment

Students will write a 3-5 paragraph Response to Literature essay with thesis statement and supporting paragraphs that include evidence from the text.

We will start this unit by doing two formative short essays in-class.  One will be based on the the structured thesis statement:

“I really enjoy _____ because ____ and _____.”

The second practice essay will be written based on a short story by Gary Paulson called “Fred and Pig.”  We will write BOTH practice essays in class.

The summative project will have students select and read a short story (from 5 or so that I make available in class), write a thesis statement and outline, and finally turn that outline into a complete paper.  We will have in-class typing time next Thursday and Friday.

Week 1 Homework:

The first homework assignment for the quarter is writing based.  Please find a copy here if you have misplaced the one you received in class yesterday.

Check Parent Portal

Posted by mrlivingston on November 8, 2011

Greetings,

All assignments that were turned in by Monday, Nov 7th (I was OUT Tuesday) are entered into the Parent Portal.

Please check for missing SUMMATIVE assignments!  Especially look to see if I have your student’s book project.  I won’t have those graded in time to give them back to students, but they are a significant chunk of the first quarter grade.  I’m very concerned about the number that are missing.  I did send out an automated e-mail note to notify families as well.

Next quarter we will have a similar assignment.  Some of the projects were really amazing.

However, I may pare down the options available in order to prepare students better for success, as some of the products that students produced are well below expectations for a major assignment (i.e. some projects look like they were written on the bus ride to school, though we had two class periods and two weeks of homework time to complete them well).

Instead of making this the last assignment of the quarter, I will likely make it one of the first assignments of next quarter.

On a partially related note, I had the honor and privilege to attend a training lead by Dr. Thomas Guskey, one of the most published and well-respected educational researchers in America.  He spoke about Standards-Based Grading — a practice Crosswinds is working towards launching in 2012-13 — and he was amazing.  I’m totally pumped to help Crosswinds innovate our grading practice as well as to tweak some of the things I am doing in grading.
